Thomas Lee, a furniture-lover living in Westport, New York during the early 1900s, saw the need for a chair that could withstand the rugged terrain of the Adirondack Mountains. After testing out several prototypes, Lee settled on what is now known as the classic Adirondack chair. This chair featured a high back, wide armrests and slanted seat made of knot-free slabs of eastern hemlock wood.

Its 25-35 degree back slope was ideal for the rugged Adirondack Mountains, making it a comfortable seat to enjoy outdoor activities. Furthermore, its ergonomic arched backrest provided extra support - so much so that no head support pillows were necessary!
