The Adirondack Chair Is An American Innovation

The ADRONDACK CHAIR: An American Invention

Thomas Lee, a furniture-lover living in Westport, New York during the early 1900s, saw the need for a chair that could withstand the rugged terrain of the Adirondack Mountains. He wanted it to be sturdy yet balanced so people would feel comfortable sitting on anything from sandy ground up through small hills. Thus was born The ADIRONDACK CHAIR!

After testing out several prototypes, Lee settled on what is now known as the classic Adirondack chair. This chair featured a high back, wide armrests and slanted seat made of knot-free slabs of eastern hemlock wood.

Its 25-35 degree back slope was ideal for the rugged Adirondack Mountains, making it a comfortable seat to enjoy outdoor activities. Furthermore, its ergonomic arched backrest provided extra support - so much so that no head support pillows were necessary!

The Adirondack chair is a beloved icon of outdoor seating, available in an infinite number of varieties around the world. It has come to be synonymous with summertime getaways, rejuvenation and nature - making it the perfect summertime companion.

These chairs can be made out of a range of materials, from teak to aluminum. However, if you're interested in being more eco-friendly, consider choosing an Adirondack chair made from recycled plastic lumber.

Tailwind, a Midwest family-owned business that has been manufacturing in Illinois for over 15 years, is proud to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional wood Adirondack chairs with their line of outdoor furniture. Each 45lb. Adirondack prevents 450 milk containers from ending up in landfills - so you can feel good about choosing plastic Adirondack chairs for your home.

Wood is a popular option, but it can be costly and laborious to keep up with. Consider plastic lumber - commonly referred to as Polywood - instead.

These plastics are usually treated with UV inhibitors to shield the color from fading in direct sunlight. As a result, outdoor furniture is highly durable, weather-resistant and easy to keep clean.

Chairs come in an array of colors and finishes, such as beautiful shades of gray, brown and green; bright hues like red, yellow or blue; they may even be stained or painted for a unique touch.

If you want an Adirondack chair that will last for years, opt for one made of high-quality and durable wood. Furthermore, be sure to check the manufacturer's warranty and maintenance requirements.

The classic Adirondack chair is typically constructed out of hardwood, though increasingly more manufacturers are opting for plastic lumber instead. These lightweight yet durable chairs can be painted or stained to blend in with any decor.

Another popular alternative is high-density polyethylene (HDPE), also known as Polywood. This proprietary material is composed of recycled plastic and often used for outdoor tables and chairs due to its durability and weather-resistant properties.
